Like several of Nguyễn Huy An’s other projects, A Ă Â … comprises a performance and an installation. The artist travelled to the northern Vietnamese city of Nam Định and rural districts in Hanoi, and meticulously extracted all 29 letters of the Vietnamese alphabet from political slogans painted on public walls and exteriors of houses. These slogans pledge commitment to implement party policies, and were written on limewashed walls, with new declarations overlaying older ones. Over time, the limewash layers have peeled off, exposing fragments of text beneath. In this mixing of old and new text, one can barely discern the content of the statements. Nguyễn Huy An individually frames and arranges the extracted letters in alphabetical order, returning the letters to their neutral state, before words, meanings and ideologies were created out of them. The artist’s reverse-vandalism is an act of resistance and points to the absurdity of the mechanisms of propaganda while also questioning its use. Through breaking the bond between words and meaning, the work can be seen as a gesture of liberation, breaking free from proclamations and doctrines to return language to its origin while offering an opportunity to create meanings anew.
