About the Artist
Nguyễn Phương Linh’s (b. 1985, Vietnam) multidisciplinary practice spans video, sculpture and installation. She is concerned with cultural shifts brought about by geographical movements, traditional roots and the fragmented history of Vietnam. Tracing a complex network of ethnicities, religions and cultural and geo-political influences, her works contemplate visible versus invisible truths, and form and time. Other thematic areas of her focus include the experience of alienation and dislocation, and the ephemeral. Nguyễn Phương Linh often conducts field research, collecting artefacts from historical sites of exchange. She then transforms these materials to construct alternative perspectives, and interpretations of histories, personal narratives and memories.
Nguyễn Phương Linh has exhibited and participated in art projects and residencies around the world. She has received awards and support from the Pollock-Kasner Foundation (United States), Hans Nefkens Foundation – BACC Award for Contemporary Art (Thailand), Prince Claus Fund (The Netherlands), Asian Cultural Council (United States) and Mondriaan Foundation (The Netherlands).
From a young age Nguyễn Phương Linh was exposed to an artistic environment. Her father was the co-founder of Nhà Sàn studio (North Vietnam’s first artist-run experimental art space), and she grew up being closely involved with the local art community both as an artist and art organiser. In 2013, she co-founded and co-directed Nhà Sàn Collective, an initiative for artistic exchanges, fostering a “just-do-it” attitude. In 2022, the collective presented at Documenta 15 in Kassel, Germany.
