Gerardo Tan

About the Artist

Working with a variety of media including found objects, painting and sculpture, artist books, collages, video and sound, Gerardo Tan (b. 1960, Philippines) engages with issues of representation and conceptual play, blurring the line between transcription and transformation in vision and process. Exploring the nature of art and how forms and materiality can be articulated in ideas and concepts, Tan often references works from the world of art and mass media to recontextualise history and subvert hierarchies. He probes material and medium, and questions the reproducibility of images and their spatial and temporal authenticity. In the process, his works give way to new, itinerant meanings.

Tan was among the three artists representing the Philippines at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2022. In 1982, he was part of the 2nd Asian Art Show at the Fukuoka Museum, Japan; and in 1999, he represented Philippines at the first Melbourne International Biennale. Tan also received the Fulbright-Hays Grant at SUNY Buffalo; Barbara Schuller’s Arts Associates Award in Buffalo, New York; 44th Western New York Exhibition; Juror’s Choice Award from the Art Association of the Philippines; and a CCP 13 Artists award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines. His work has been featured in museums and galleries in Asia, the United States, Europe and Australia.
